Hosting an event? Want to make sure your staff is consumed with time intensive questions so they can be prevented from doing their job? Ineffective or non-existent signage may be your answer! Ineffective event signs simultaneously help you blend in with everything else and prevent your event from having it’s own unique identity. A side benefit is it will keep your staff too busy to deal with the other issues that inevitably come up during big events.
On The Other Hand… If you are open to a better result you could choose colorful, dynamic, and informative signs which can help guests navigate, understand, and enjoy your event independently of you and your staff. Guests who can act independently are typically happier and more likely to spend extended periods of time at your event because there are more options readily available to them.
I recently went to a carnival with little to nothing in the way of signs or directionals and from where I parked and entered the event there were only food stands visible. While I was very happy to see several different choices for food I also had to walk around for about 20 minutes trying to figure out where the actual carnival was! No event staff could be found and I had to rely on one of the food vendors there to get where I wanted to go. Waiting on the vendor took longer due to the sheer volume of people requesting his attention. It turns out there were two separate places in the park that were being used. One for the carnival, and one for the food and since this was a large park the carnival was barely visible from the food vendors. Signs could have eliminated this and driven more sales for the carnival at the same time.
Another downfall of the lack of signage at this carnival is nobody knew the reason for the carnival of who it supported. Since this was very public and popular park and there were many people who hadn’t been formally invited to the carnival and were exploring and enjoying the many aspects of it. The identity of this carnival remained a mystery the entire time I was there, I had no idea who this event was hosted by and why it was being put on.
