No Power Source… No Problem!

solar sign

VSG was recently presented with an interesting problem and we arrived at a very 2018 solution.  What would you do if you needed a lighted sign and didn’t have a readily available power supply?

Problem: After more than one expansion one of the facilities we help needed some lighted signs in a remote parking lot.  This is not an unusual request.  After we met with the engineer we thought we had our work cut out for us.  They needed a couple of signs with exact measurements.  The two options being considered were running power to the area or look at the potential for a solar option.

Solution: These days when you say solar people think about the expensive panels people have on their roof that quit functioning in the shade or at night.  Not functioning at night or in the shade wasn’t going to work for a 24 hour parking lot so we found a solar sign with battery back-up.  The sign functions 24 hours a day and the charge the battery gets during the day is more than enough to charge the internal batteries and power the sign all night long and on overcast days.  VSG was able to install and program the sigh and we will maintain it as well!

We enjoy being presented with unique challenges and answering those with unique and affordable solutions.

How Can A Sign Be Part Of Your Office Décor?

I was watching a re-run of a 1980’s show called L.A. Law recently and right there in front of me was a timelessly classic example of a sign created to be part of an office décor. While I cannot verify it I would go so far as to say the sign was created to engender the feeling that you are in a safe place and the people here take care of things like no one else can.

You may not even know you have that feeling you do. Remember the first time you saw the Disneyland sign when you were a child?  For most adults that memory will never be erased and most adults have the same feeling today.  The feeling today will cost us a lot more money but people happily spend that money in order to get the associated feeling.  The sign is where it starts and the park is where it happens.

When you first see the sign in the L.A. Law office the next thing you see is the perfectly appointed flowers and the director of first impressions. You know you are in a special place and expect to be treated that way.  When you look at how the rest of the office is designed you now expect the best.  Memorable to say the least… remarkable when you consider it all started with a sign.  Want to make this happen?  Talk to VSG!

Display Table Issues? VSG Has You Covered!

In order to reach the maximum number of people Visual Solution Group attends different events defined as “mixers.”  These are events hosted by Chambers, Networking Groups and even small Trade Groups.  While we’re there we pay close attention what we see.  This is a story about what we saw about 4 months ago and how we changed what a company was doing.  There might be a nugget here for you.

When we walked into the group there was little to catch our eyes initially.  We saw exactly 20 vendors who paid $250 to display what they had to a target group for a little more than 2 hours.  We later learned that over 500 people were in the room.  I learned who the attendees were.  I learned what the attendees are likely to buy.  I learned that at least one of the vendors had almost no one visiting their table.  I sought to learn why and how I could help.

After about 2 minutes I discovered there was very little reason to visit this table.  Nothing looked polished or sharp.  Their handout material was copies for a low rate copy machine and they didn’t have any giveaways… Not even pieces of candy.  After talking with the person in charge of the booth I learned they have been doing this in this manner for some time with similar results.

The changes we made cost minimal dollars and made a huge result.  We created a table cover that drew people to the table.  We spent just a few dollars and had their promotional material professionally printed.  We spent a few dollars on some promotional giveaways that were both memorable and valuable.  By making these changes we created a reason for the company and their staff to show up and by doing this we went from a boring table to a table that got visited.  Wanna know more?  Let’s talk.

Signs You Might Never See That Matter

07-24-17 Truck Picture

We encounter signs every day of our life and some are more effective than others. Some tell you about a sale and others foretell of wet paint.  The importance of these signs and where they are located matter greatly to the meaning you assign to them.

Depending on what you’re doing the physical location of the sign matters as well.  Freeway signs are typically set in concrete and don’t change from time to time.  Here in California Cal Trans has electronic signs that may change with road conditions or anticipated delays.  Also in California it is illegal to pass on the right on the freeway and many people ignore this law and some ignore it at their peril.  This truck has subtle but effective signs that not only inform what you should do but they also inform what could happen should you choose to ignore the rules.  You make the call.

Signs like this tend to interrupt what you are doing and change your focus.  While the idea of suicide may scare you it may also scare you into understanding what to do next.  Passing on the right is illegal and trucks are required by law to adhere to the right lane except when passing.  The idea of giving them the room they need while following the law increases the odds of arriving alive and we are all big fans of that.  Like we said… Some signs inform and others keep you alive!

Signs With Specific Meaning And Potential Ramifications

save space 2

Some signs are posted as a convenience and an example would be “Operating Hours” and this is meant to help a situation or just to get you on your way. Some signs keep us safe and a sign warning you of a “Vicious Dog” might help you stay out of harms way.  Still other signs have very real consequences.

This is a sign a customer just happened to notice in a local restaurant.  This made him chuckle at first and after thinking about the potential consequences it made him a bit upset so he took a picture and forwarded it on to me.  The sign tells the customer this counter is specially designated and supposed to remain clear to help with those customers with disabilities.  It seems like customers with a disability are the last ones to be helped with this.  Taken to the next step it appears this sign could get someone or some company sued with good cause.  If that happens how many people lose their positions to help pay for the award?

By their own admission this company is telling everyone else to keep the counter clean and they are the ones loading it up with product.  It looks like the company and the public would be better served if the sign were reversed and the staff and especially management had the opportunity to read it!  There are laws on the books to address areas just like this and from what we can tell those laws are being ignored.  What do you think?

Sacramento International Airport

20170412_170701

I’ve been a proud member of the Sacramento Asian Chamber of Commerce since 2007. I’ve witnessed first-hand what this organization has meant to the economic, cultural and political development of the area we live in.  The tireless work performed by the members of the cohesive and dedicated group cannot be denied.

Visual Solution Group was recently called by the Sacramento Asian Chamber to renew and enhance their display at Sacramento International.  The airport is often the first impression someone has of our region and what an impression it must make.  Being able to piggyback on the credibility is an incredible opportunity all but a few overlook and those who take advantage of the opportunity are well rewarded.  Millions of people arrive at the airport  for activities related to sports, business, politics, Dixieland jazz and even recreation.

Some groups don’t pay sufficient attention to what their signs say about who they are and their place in a community.  This isn’t true with the Sacramento Asian Chamber.  They wanted their signage renewed, image upgraded and updated and they had a timeline.  Timelines matter as few things are completed like you want without a deadline and when signs become worn and dated it never speaks well of the organization it speaks of and most of us can hear our mom telling us “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.”  VSG was given content, positioning’ location and a deadline for completion.  VSG completed this upgrade on time and with a product everyone is happy with… Most importantly the client is happy and anyone who stops and pays attention will come away with an idea what this group means to our home.

Where Are The Canned Peaches Kept?

self check

Grocery stores use oodles of signage to keep their customers first informed and then use additional signage to attempt to alleviate pressure on their employees. Examples of signs alleviating pressure is where the restrooms are or where canned corn is merchandised. Both are laudable goals. Speaking from experience they are missing both goals because people see only what they want to see and often that boils down to prices. What makes up the majority of signs in grocery stores are sales, prices, directions and other information that may help inform someone on their shopping trip.

One sign in particular conveys unique powers giving people a sense of self-efficacy… That signs shows them where they can handle the checkout of their items all by themselves. Anyone who has ever waited in a 10 items or less line or a self check line or ever worked in a grocery store knows a surprising amount of people either bring far too many items into self checkout or simply cannot handle the terminal. While I agree this sign is doing its job perfectly by convincing customers self checkout is easy to use, sometimes I wonder if the result is matching the intention here.

I must assume the intention here is to get more people using self checkout and thus providing a route to a quicker checkout experience. The reality is this sign provides no guidelines as to what constitutes a self check level of skill or limits the amount of groceries one can take through the self check terminal. These factors often lead to longer wait times and people using the 10 items and under line more often than not. Ignoring these factors create the exact opposite experience they are trying to avoid!

All Gender Solution

Bathroom

On Monday, August 22, 2016, Assembly bill 1732 written by Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, passed the Assembly 53-13. This bill requires all single-user restrooms in any business establishment, place of public accommodation, or state or local government agency be labeled as “all-gender.” The essential meaning is any bathroom anywhere.

As our country struggles with the issue of allowing people to use bathrooms consistent with their gender identity rather than their biological sex, California is yet again paving the way for change.  While some may agree with this we know that other disagree and the reality is we are in a changing world and adapting to change is the overall recipe for success.  For as long as I can remember, restrooms have been labeled male or female with nothing in between.  This designation often applied to single-use restrooms.  It never made any sense to designate one sex or the other because in single-use restrooms there is hardly ever any difference between the two restrooms and we that being said why should people be restricted to using one or the other based on their gender?

In accordance with the new bill, Visual Solutions Group, Inc. is here to help provide a harassment free restroom environment for everyone, especially those who don’t fit neatly into expectations of what it looks like to be male or female.  This is the law and adhering to the law is required.

Confused? Problem Solved!

k1

Recently we visited a hospital experiencing issues in their departments with flow of communication. Several departments had inefficient furniture setup forcing patients to line up in hallways and blocking high traffic areas. The communication issue was an overload of supplemental and redundant signage that accompanied necessary signage which conveyed important information helping employees more quickly serve the needs of the patient.

Lines setting up oddly due to chair/sign setup forcing people to go one way or the other.

Because of the sign floor mats and free standing signs, some departments weren’t in compliance with ADA standards for amount of space for a wheelchair to pass.

The solution we arrived at involved helping them get rid of unnecessary floor mats and stand alone signs and replaced them with ceiling hanging signs and vinyl floor graphics. The mats helped to free up space in the lobbies of these departments and allowed for more efficient furniture setup which provided additional room for wheelchair access and become ADA compliant.

Too many secondary/supplemental signs around the necessary signs causing inattentional blindness

Helping them get rid of redundant and unnecessary signage directing their patient’s attention away from the primary signage designed to help expedite patient flow. When signage is confusing patients cannot get the information they require and the information they need must subsequently be repeated by the employees at the desk. This additional step slowed the process down and annoyed both the employee and the patient. Also, we suggested they make the signs conveying necessary information into larger, permanent, signs instead of the pieces of paper currently occupying the front of the employee’s desk.

Confusing or Misleading Signs

Each department uses signs that include information directing which department to go when employees in that department were away. The problem being that the sign was a stand-alone sign taking up precious real estate in the lobby of these departments and the sign was always on display. Whenever an employee stepped away and a patient approached the desk and found no one there and this sign is in place they often walk to another department which ended up being a waste of time especially when the staff member is actually there and momentarily stepped away. VSG came up with several signage ideas to alleviate this confusion and even implemented wall hinges for the sign so it can be rotated out and back without causing any additional confusion.

When It Absolutely, Positively Needs To Be Communicated According To Fed Ex

arctic-glacier

Signs and logos are crucial marketing tools for any business or enterprise that needs to attract and retain customers. Fed Ex would know because they spent millions to communicate and brand their company. Have you ever noticed that their logo has an arrow in the middle o it? Once you see the arrow you will never unsee it!

Based on a FedEx study completed in 2012, over 75% of consumers will enter a store they’ve never before visited based on signage alone!  Think about this for a second, irrespective of how good or bad your product or reputation is, 7.6 out of 10 people will enter your business based on your signs.  However, 52% of consumers are less willing to enter a store with damaged, misspelled, or low quality signs out front. Going even further 60% of consumers said that the absence of signs ultimately deters them from coming to the store in the first place. Your signs, or lack thereof, are representative of your business and the standards it upholds. When a business lacks thought and work in their signs, consumers are lead to believe your products or services will follow that same pattern.

From small businesses to large corporate chains, signs play an extremely important role in customer’s attitude towards your business and its products or services. The FedEx survey revealed that 68% of consumers draw a direct correlation between the quality of signs outside a business to the quality of the products or services being offered. The study also shows that 68% of people will purchase a new item or service because of impactful, or striking signage.
