Sneaky Little Signs

 

Some signs are big and bold and leave no doubt what they are trying to convey.  Think of a sign on a major freeway informing you of an upcoming fast food place or a place to fill your car up with gas.  There is seldom any doubt where to exit.  These signs are there to draw your attention to something.  What about signs that get posted with the hope you will ignore or just gloss over them.

This is an example of a “Warning Sticker” on a Bird e-scooter.  This sticker tells you what the rules of the road are and what the rules of the particular scooter you are riding on are.  This is posted near the base of the handlebars in a place you are unlikely to look.  The biggest takeaway for me is the terms license required and helmet required.  Like motorcycles, this is a 2 wheeled mode of transportation and that leaves me to wonder what class of license is required.  I also wonder what form of helmet is required.

The next item, and possibly the most important thing I’m looking for are instructions on how to ride this.  They did a good job of telling me where I cannot ride it (sidewalks) and who can ride it (18+ years old) but I don’t know how to ride it or any of the actual rules of the road.  This sign is placed on e-scooters and it’s these scooters that are one of the leading causes of hospital visits from motor vehicles right now.  This is a really sneaky little sign!

Not A Missile Drop Area…

The more specific a sign is the more likely it’ll be read and the directions followed.  Often the reader will read between the lines and take an extra moment and determine what prompted the sign to be erected.  I saw such a sign on the Rio Vista Bridge recently.  My initial suspicion was missiles!

There’s a lot going on with this sign… that presents both opportunities and problems.  When we try to communicate too much we often communicating nothing.  Confusing words like;

– Penal Code Violation

– Willfully Drops

– Missiles

– Misdemeanor

– Under Surveillance

This sign is primarily aimed at pedestrians based on size and placement.  It would be difficult to drop something from a bridge and it would be ever more of a challenge to drop a missile from the bridge if you were driving over the bridge.  As far as a warning about a missile goes… that’s a first for me.

Surveillance is quite a different warning.  Surveillance is something we’ve become used to in our society and is commonplace.  I’ve had customers place signs like this without the ability to watch anyone in any way.  They are piggybacking on what others are doing and are either saving money or placing themselves at risk.  When someone wants a sign saying something is happening they aren’t really doing I advise them to rethink their position.  If something happens where a video would have helped prove or disprove something and it’s found out they don’t have a video a legal issue could crop up (This has happened and been litigated) and someone could be on the legal hook over a sign.

“Now That Was An Attention Getter!”

In the movie “Smokey And The Bandit” Sheriff Buford T. Justice played by Jackie Gleason said early in the movie “Now That Was An Attention Getter” shortly after getting the attention of a teenager attempting to vandalize a car.  A great sign can divert your attention from what you’re focused on and get you to change that focus.

I was on the freeway the other day and this van was in front of me.  I had my daughter get my phone out and take this picture so I could share it. This moving sign accomplishes a lot.  Since it’s on a van you see the words and that forces a change in what you were doing.  My first thought was very different than what the sign was actually saying.  Working in the medical industry further anchored my attention to this sign.  By then my mind changed what it was paying attention to and was now locked into the message in front of me.

The challenge I had with this type of sign is how much attention someone might pay while in the process of driving.  Diverting attention in this manner could lead to an accident… no one wants that.  This sign might be better placed in a diabetic clinic or on a direct mail piece however doing that might diminish the impact.  Is it possible this sign could offend some?  Yes.  Is taking that chance worthwhile?  Maybe yes and maybe no.  I’d be willing to risk that depending on where the sign was going to be placed.  I can tell you it got my attention.  What about you?

What Can A Sign Explain?

 

From time to time I run across a picture of a sign doing its job in an uncommon manner.  I’ve attached a sign going above and beyond what it’s designed to do and while I wish this was my sign I have to be up front and say this is just a picture.  As far as I know this is a real picture taken after an event and much can potentially be learned from this sign.

If I am a personal injury attorney I see proof of a threat to the public and something to put in front of a jury to garner sympathy.  If I’m designing a place for people to move around I know I need a safer place!  No matter who I am or what I’m doing it appears there is a hazard I need to look at and determine the next logical step to take.

I recently witnessed a work crew installing “No Smoking” signs.  While watching the installation process it was hard to breathe due to the number of people smoking and reading the signs at the same time.  This was happening in front of a Bay Area Medical Center!  The next time you stop to read a sign, any sign at all, take a minute and ask why that sign had to be placed at that place.  Often there is a reason and the reason might either surprise you and might even disappoint you!  When you need us we will be there!

Some Assembly Was Required

Sometimes we are asked to do things not completely related to signs and completely related to helping just get something done.   Recently at Kaiser South they had something they needed done, no one available to do it so they asked us.

Kaiser needed Bollards installed and they didn’t have the manpower to get the job accomplished in the time frame required.  Bollards are objects (shown here) that protect pedestrians from passing vehicles and in a health care setting they assume an even greater role than simply protecting property.  Kaiser had another company place the internal structure in place and they purchased the actual piece to be installed shown here.  This is where the idea of “Some assembly Required” must have come from!

A Bollard is defined as something designed to divert traffic from an area or road and these fit the bill.  These weigh just over 600 pounds and a forklift, two people and a ton of patience was required.  Kaiser had the guide post placed in front of the entrance they wanted protected and once the was dry Jake and I did our part.

This was important to Kaiser for the simple reason they wanted to protect their patients from passing cars.  There are a lot of people who come and go every day and anytime you mix a large number of pedestrians and moving cars the potential for problems is there.  When you add the distraction of a cell phone with the driver of a car and a cell phone with a pedestrian the mix can turn deadly.

Kaiser made the completion of the task top priority and we were able to assemble this for them.  The final result was excellent and even though this wasn’t a sign these act as a visual reminder to beware.

Why Specific Specifics Matter

I saw this when I was helping a client in San Francisco.  While I’m not a huge fan of big cities I am a huge fan of San Francisco.  This sign is just one of the reasons why.  This sign is so specific it virtually eliminates guesswork and second guessing.

You can only smoke at the curb and if there is no curb you must be at least 15 feet from exits, entrances (sometimes these are the same so this eliminates arguments and alternative definitions) and you cannot smoke within 15 feet of operable windows and vents.  About the only thing this sign doesn’t explain is what an operable window is, how to identify a vent and what the penalty is if you get caught.  The clarity is amazing and from a sign makers point of view this is what we strive to create.

Contrast this with a “No Parking” sign randomly placed without any parameters.  How far away from this “No Parking” sign can I park?  Are there other restrictions I must observe?  Who came up with this “No Parking” rule, who is going to enforce the rule and what’s the penalty if I ignore the rule?  Most of these questions are easily answered in minimal space and giving answers to these questions might actually increase or decrease compliance.  If the penalty for parking is a $10 fine someone may not care on the other hand if the penalty is having your car towed it’s more likely to be obeyed.  Specifics matter!

Clearly Understood Or Intentionally Mis-Understood?

Imagine you are driving your Green automobile and you’re in desperate need of a parking spot.  Thank goodness you’re not handicapped and if you were you would have had a space 10 minutes ago.  You happen on this sign… “Reserved For Green Vehicles” and all of a sudden you remember your automobile is green.  Perfect!  Problem solved!

Even the most complete and clear sign can cause confusion in the wrong (or right) hands and this is a clear example.  The space is reserved for green vehicles and even though the sign maker and property owner meant something different it wasn’t made abundantly clear.  When Tesla decided to create charging stations they were very clear and made them Tesla Electric Vehicle Parking.  Zero confusion and from what I have been told almost 100% compliance from other drivers.

Sign confusion can be very expensive, time consuming and can be eliminated with effort.  The nice folks at Tesla could have easily created a sign saying Electric Vehicle Parking only and that would have included every other electric car driven and that wasn’t their goal.  Tesla went a step further and this is where the magic lies.  Having a sign that includes their logo makes it seem almost like Tesla owns the parking spots and parking there is a privilege.  If you’ve ever looked at where Tesla’s are parked and seen a row of them it certainly appears there is safety and some lack of confusion in numbers.  Wherever possible be as complete and specific as possible.

Vegetarian Corn Dog?

Webster’s dictionary defines “Vegetarian” as a person who does not eat meat : someone whose diet consists wholly of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products.  Webster’s defines “Corn Dog” as a frankfurter dipped in cornmeal batter, fried, and served on a stick.  Webster’s defines Frankfurter” as a cured cooked sausage (as of beef or beef and pork) that may be skinless or stuffed in a casing.  Each of these disagree with one another and they do it on the same sign.

When you take a good Look at this sign it’s pretty easy to understand how confusion with signage happens.  It also explains why some signs bounce between out front office, you and our graphic designer.  How someone sees a sign is influenced by their point of view and how they read a particular sign.  I want to think this is where the idea of KISS came from.  KISS stands for Keep It Simple Sign person and we agree.

We will often see the final price of a sign overly influenced by redesign costs and much of this happens due to visual confusion and removing confusion is possibly the biggest reason we have signs.  I have seen signs that tell the reader No Stopping while telling you on the same sign to come to a complete stop.  The sign was professionally done and someone wasn’t paying attention!  We go out of our way to read your sign, determine how we can read your sign in a different manner and then and only then move on to creation.

A Contradiction In Terms On Display

There are times in life when we encounter something so clear its easy to miss.  Some people use the phrase “You can’t see the forest for the trees” which means the trees are in the way.  In this week’s example someone took the time to create and post a sign to alert others that no sign should be posted there.  This is like passing a police officer on the freeway while speeding and talking on your phone which makes no sense at all!

This sign almost begs someone to post a sign if for no other reason than someone else did.  There’s no authority on this sign so no real reason to respect what it says.  Had they taken the time to state who controlled the space and who was forbidding the posting of a sign it might go a long way to getting others to comply.  Since they were making a sign why not get it done right the first time?

Signs in schools or health care facilities have an even higher standard to serve.  Signs need to be as concise as reasonable while explaining what they need to explain.    Explaining everything there is to explain on one sign is seldom an attainable goal.  The “Post No Signs” should have explained who made the demand and left it at that.  Anything else isn’t necessary or helpful information and may lead to confusion.

In Elk Grove “Herd Is The Word”

At Visual Solutions Group we love sharing things that give back to the community and have the side benefit of making where we live seem just a little more community oriented.  We recently installed this banner on the building front of the Law Office ofGuenard & Bozarth.   This is the oldest personal injury law firm in Elk Grove and they are huge supporters of the students of Elk Grove.

Student athletes have told the attorneys there how much they appreciate the support of fans and the sponsors of their efforts.  This business and many others also pay for banners on the sidelines during games with the proceeds going to the Quarterback Club and eventually flowing through to the students.  Some of this money helps to pay for the cost of uniforms and many of the required items the players need.

The attorneys from this law firm and many of the business owners with sideline banners played sports in high school and college and they know what being involved with sports has meant throughout their academic and business pursuits.  The coaches make certain their athletes understand the contribution signs like this make and have the students acknowledge those efforts.  This helps to teach appreciation and the idea of paying it forward.  No one in this office has a student attending Elk Grove and they have the sign and banner simply because it’s the right thing to do for the students and the community.  It’s an honor every time we install a new banner.
